Wrist Injury - Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

 

Wrist and metacarpal injuries are more common in contact sports, racquet sports, and gymnastics. The wrist represents one of the most complicated regions of the musculoskeletal anatomy. It is comprised of 15 bones, 27 articular surfaces, and an elaborate system of ligaments that maintain these bones and surfaces in proper relation to one another.

The wrist joint is formed proximally by the distal surface of the radius and ulna and the attached fibrocartillage disc, and distally by the scaphoid, lunate and triquetral bones. The wrist as a region extends from the distal radius and ulna to the base of the metacarpals. The wrist positions and supports the hand and therefore has to combine strength and precision with a wide range of movement with stability.

Wrist pain is common. Repetitive motion can damage your wrist. Everyday activities like typing, racquet sports or sewing can cause pain, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist pain with bruising and swelling can be a sign of injury. The signs of a possible fracture include misshapen joints and inability to move your wrist. Some wrist fractures are a result of osteoporosis.

Causes

You Can also have wrist pain from repetitive use that results in an inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis). This is termed a repetitive motion injury and is really not a true sprain. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another common wrist injury that may occur from repetitive motion.

Symptoms

When an injury occurs, pain and swelling are the main symptoms. The wrist may become discolored and bruised. Doctors refer to this as ecchymosis. The wrist may remain painful for several weeks. There are no specific symptoms that allow your doctor to determine whether a wrist ligament injury has occurred.

Typically, there will be pain, tenderness, swelling, or bruising of the injured wrist. If the injury is serious, you may have trouble moving the wrist.

Wrist Injury Treatment

If there is no fracture seen on the x-ray, the doctor may diagnose a sprain. In cases where there is tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox, the doctor may also suspect there may be a fracture of the scaphoid that is not apparent on the x-rays.

For more severe sprains, you will likely be given a Velcro wrist splint that you can take on and off. Also you might be prescribed some form of pain medication. You should make sure that you let the doctor know what other medications you are taking and any allergies that you have.

Corticosteroid injection for carpal tunnel improves symptoms in more than half of patients; surgical intervention to release the transverse ligament and decompress the nerve entrapment may be indicated

NSAIDs reduce inflammation and use of cock-up splints applied during activities and while sleeping reduces strain from repetitive use and reduces symptoms

How to: String a Lacrosse Pocket Step by Step Guide

This is a short article describing some key objectives of stringing the topstring of a Lacrosse stick. If you are interested in stringing a stick with clear pictures and detailed descriptions, please visit TheLacrosseGuy-ide website below.

 

 

 

1.) Take the mesh and fold the top over 2-3 rows. For the purpose of this guide, you should have 10 holes across the top.

 

2) The first step in stringing a lacrosse stick is to attach the mesh to the scoop of the head. To start, tie a figure 8 knot on one end of the lace and pull the other end thorough the first sidewall hole as shown in Figure 2 & 2a.

 

Figure 2, the lace should be pulled through the folded mesh so the string comes from underneath the mesh.

 

3) Figure 3, once through the first mesh hole bring the lace back over the sidewall rail illustrated by the White Arrow and insert in the 2nd sidewall hole with the Blue Arrow shown in Figure 3a. One through the second sidewall hole, bring the lace through the 1st mesh diamond for a second time from underneath.

 

4.) Figure 4 shows that the first mesh diamond is anchored to the side of the lacrosse head

 

5) Now its time to attach the mesh to the scoop holes. Take the position of the lace shown in Figure 4 and push it through the 2nd mesh hole, bringing the lace underneath the scoop and pulling it though the 1st large scoop hole. Figure 5

 

6) Pull the lace from the scoop hole (Pink) and bring it under the previous segment of lace (Red) so that it resembles Figure 6, making sure that the string is as tight as possible.

 

7.) Continue to now bring the lace over the backside of the mesh and push it through the 4th mesh hole indicated in a white number 4. Bring the lace under the scoop and pull it through the 2nd scoop hole indicated by the orange number 2.

 

Pull the lace from the scoop hole and bring it under the previous segment of lace so that it resembles Figure 6, making sure that the string is as tight as possible.

 

 

8.) Continue to bring the mesh through the 7th mesh hole underneath through the 3rd large scoop hole and then under the previous segment of lace. Pull tight.

 

9) Continue to push the lace though the 9th mesh hole and bring the lace underneath the 4th large scoop hole. Then pull the lace under the previous segment of lace. Pull tight.

 

10) Push the lace (Neon Green) through the last mesh hole and through the 1st sidewall hole.. Once through tie a knot at the end. The first part of the topstring is complete. Be sure that all the lace segments are tight for a consistent pocket.

 

Now if you wish you may add a second string across the top for an added measure of durability.

However if you choose not too, you must anchor the last mesh hole to the sidewall.

 

Making a knot at the end of the second lace, push the lace through the 2nd sidewall hole and up though the 1st mesh hole. As illustrated by the white arrow, bring the lace over the sidewall and through the 2nd sidewall wall and up through the first mesh hole again.

 

 

 

11) The 2nd string has now anchored the mesh to the sidewall hole. Use the extra lace as an added reinforcement by doing steps 4-10 from the left.

 

Push the lace (Orange) though the 2nd mesh hole and under through the 1st scoop hole. Then bring the lace (Purple) under the previous segment of lace.

 

12) Continue by pushing the lace (Yellow) though the 5th mesh hole and under through the 2nd scoop hole. Then bring the lace (Blue) under the lace colored in yellow.

 

13) Continue following the illustrations.

 

14) Continue to follow the illustration.

 

15) Finally pull the lace through the 10th mesh hole and knot it through the sidewall hole.

How can I throw a big hook in bowling?

I am a high school student and I am in a bowling league. I bowl about 15-17 mph and I throw it over the 2nd arrow. I put a small hook on it to go into the pocket. I wanted to know how I can throw a huge curve, like going across the alley from the left side to the right to hit the pocket. (I am a right handed thrower) Everyone else in my league throws it like that, and although I have success with it I want to just try it and see if I can improve. I average 175.

Yo bro...I have the same concerns and desires to launch my bowling ball like that. Like yourself, I launch mine over the 2-3 arrow, but like yourself, it goes long and flicks a little hook into the pocket (3 pin) at the last second. It seems annoying to me, since most my friends and other bowlers throw that big hook into the zone, then KABLAM, the pins fly like bombs. My ball is an Hammer Onyx Vibe at 15lbs...right handed. Drill layout: Spinner/Semi Roller. Me: Tweener. Average: A paltry 150.

where could I look for a kit for my husband to make a leather wrapped handle for a hunting knife?

My hubby wants to re-wrap an old hunting knife that had belonged to his father. I've looked on the web but nothing for leather, only wood or bone...

I've been making and restoring knives for the better part of 25 years and I have to say, I have yet to see a real "leather-wrapped" grip on a knife. What most folks refer to as "leather-wrapped" is in fact stacked leather made up of a dozen or so leather disks.

Tell your hubby to head to Ebay and look for "tooling leather" and get about a square foot or so. It's not expensive. He'll then have to use one of the original spacers (leather disks) as a pattern and hand cut each one with an Xacto knife. Just cut the inside to match the old leather or the knife....leave the outside rough shaped. Once he has them stacked thick enough, use a Dremel or a sanding block to shape the outsides of the disks down. use finer and finer grits just like if you were doing wood and finish with some wax.

Cherry Recipes in Honor of our First President, George Washington

Bring some history into your kitchen.  Get the kids in the kitchen to help you bake some cherry treats.  As you work together, talk to them about the early history of our country and our first President George Washington.  This can lead to even more talks about our history.  Don't leave it to the schools to teach your children the history of their country.  Unfortunately, many of today's textbook don't even have the correct information in them.  Let your kids learn from you as you build up our country in their eyes.  Most kids like to bake cookies and these Chocolate Cherry Cookies would be a good project for you  as they are simple and Made From a cake mix.  And they are diabetic friendly so even the diabetic children (of all ages)  can enjoy them.  Or You Can use a regular chocolate cake mix for regular cookies.  Tiny Cherry Cheesecakes are also a delicious choice and they are also diabetic friendly.  However they, too, can be made regular by replacing the Equal with sugar.  These tiny cheesecakes have a chocolate crust and who doesn't love chocolate and cherries together?  And speaking of chocolate, how about some Oh-So-Easy Cherry Brownies? 

CHOCOLATE CHERRY COOKIES

1 (8 oz) pkg sugar-free chocolate cake mix

3 tbsp skim milk

1/2 tsp almond extract

10 maraschino cherries, rinsed, drained and halved

2 tbsp white chocolate chips

1/2 tsp canola oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, beat cake mix, milk and extract with an electric mixer at low speed.  When mixture looks crumbly, increase speed to medium and beat 2 minutes or until smooth dough forms.  (Dough will be very sticky.)  Coat hands with cooking spray and shape dough into 1-inch balls.  Place balls 2 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets.  Flatten each ball slightly.  Place cherry half in center of each cookie.  Bake 8-10 minutes or until cookies losse their shine and tops begin to crack.  DO NOT OVERBAKE OR COOKIES WILL BE HARD WHEN COOLED.  Remove to wire racks and cool completely. 

Place chips and oil in a small microwave-safe bowl and cook a few seconds at a time, removing and stirring until chips are melted.  Drizzle over cooled cookies.  Allow drizzle to set before serving.

TINY CHERRY CHEESECAKES

Crust: 1 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup Equal-Lite

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup cold butter

2 tbsp cold water

Filling: 

6 oz cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup Equal-Lite

2 tbsp milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 egg

1 can sugar-free or lite cherry pie filling

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Grease 24 mini-muffins cups and set aside.To make crust:  In a small mixing bowl, combine flour, Equal and cocoa.  Cut in butter until crumbly.  Gradually add water, mixing with a fork until mixture forms a ball.  Divide dough and shape into 24 balls. Place in prepared miniature muffin tins and press dough onto the bottom and up sides of each muffin cup.

To make filling:  In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and Equal until smooth.  Beat in milk and vanilla.  Add egg; beat on low just until combined.  Spoon approximately 1  tablespoonful into each muffin cup.  Bake for 15-18 minutes or until set.  Cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes.  Carefully remove from pans to cool completely.  Top each cake with a dab of pie filling before serving.  Store in refrigerator.

OH-SO-EASY CHERRY BROWNIES

If you are a fan of Black Forest Cake, you will love these cherry brownies.

 1 pkg. (21.5 oz) brownie mix

1 cup cherry pie filling

1/4 cup oil

2 eggs

1 1/4 cups chocolate chips

Combine brownie mix, pie filling, oil, and eggs together and mix well. Grease bottom only of a 13" x 9" baking pan. Pour batter into pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes until done. After removing from oven, sprinkle with the chocolate chips and spread when they melt. Cool and cut into squares. To make a tasty and pretty serving, top brownie square with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a spoonful of the leftover pie filling.

Last night I made Turkey Burgers...?

Last night I made the BEST turkey burgers with 1.25 lbs of ground turkey, 1 pkg of lipton onion soup powder, 1 egg, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. They were soooo juicy and delicious. I sauteed mushrooms and onions in a pan with butter and worcester (for cooking and marinating) sauce. We had swiss cheese with the mushrooms and onions on top and it was the best. I don't unsually like the taste of ground turkey but my husband does not want to eat red meat anymore because of how long it takes to digest in your system. Does anyone else have any other really good recipes for ground turkey? Willing to share?

My husband can't eat beef any longer.. not even organically raised. He developed an allergy to it that is so severe..

Rachel brought these outrageously different burgers to me one afternoon while I was hard at work on this book. Turkey is an especially lean meat, so you really have to add some moisture to it; Rachel's done that here by using veggies. She made a lot of these, like we always do, to be sure we have leftovers ? and I couldn't stop eating them for the next 2 days! Now, 5 years after we were introduced to eating low carb, I've all but forgotten that burgers once came with a bun!

Burgers:
2 1/2 pounds ground turkey
1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar
1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 tablespoon Quick and Easy Sugar-Free Ketchup, recipe follows
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch cayenne pepper
1 large egg, beaten
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Garnish:
10 tablespoons mayonnaise
10 red leaf lettuce leaves
10 tomato slices
10 onion slices
10 pickle spears

Make the Burgers: Mix all the ingredients together with your hands, except the oil, in a bowl.

Divide the meat mixture into 10 equal-sized patties.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working in batches, cook the burgers, turning once, until lightly browned and cooked through, about 7 minutes per side.(A instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the thickest burger should read at least 165 degrees F.)

Divide the burgers among plates--2 to a plate. Dollop each serving with mayonnaise and stack lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle on top.

Quick and Easy Sugar-Free Ketchup:
8 ounces no-sugar-added tomato sauce
6 ounces no-sugar-added tomato paste
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1/4 cup sugar substitute (recommended: Splenda)

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Yield: 1 1/2 cups

Vegetable spray, as needed

Vegetables:
3 ribs celery, cut into thirds
2 medium yellow squash, halved crosswise
2 medium zucchini, halved crosswise
1 medium yellow onion, quartered (about 1 cup)
1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded, and quartered
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

Chicken:
1 (4-pound) chicken, cut into 8 pieces
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
4 bay leaves

Garnish:
Lemon zest, for garnish
Chopped parsley, for garnish

Equipment: 1 large roasting pan

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Lightly coat the roasting pan with vegetable spray.

Make the Vegetables: Toss all of the ingredients in a large bowl, and arrange them in the roasting pan, leaving room in the center for the chicken.

Prepare the Chicken: Nestle the chicken pieces in the center of the pan. Combine the remaining ingredients and sprinkle evenly over the chicken. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.

Remove the chicken from the oven and baste with the drippings. Continue baking uncovered until well browned, about 1 hour more. Arrange the chicken on a platter surrounded by the vegetables. Sprinkle with the garnish.

Adjusting Draw Weight - Compound?

Im using the Odyssey II bow by fred bear

theres 2 little wheels, one at the top of the bow and one at the bottom. which screw am i supose to loosen, to reduce the draw weight. and will this make the draw length lower? thanks

Recommend you refer to the link below to the 2008 Bear online owner's manual. It will show you how to adjust draw weight (adjust the limb pocket bolts with a hex head wrench...don't loosen beyond 3 turns) and how to adjust draw length (the little wheel on the cam).

Adjusting the draw weight by turning the limb pocket bolts won't affect draw length. Adjusting the draw length will slightly change draw weight, and a chart indicating how much is in the owner's manual.
