It has nothing to do with being a single parent as you rightly point out, I myself am a single parent and cannot even imagine the mindset that allows a parent to do what she did.

However, I think it does have a lot to do with the benefits culture, and often as many single parents are forced onto benefits it reflects the same way.

I have no idea how she truly believed that she would get away with it, I think it was most probably pure stupidity and poor education standards. She evidently didn't have a fantastic start in life, and thus brought her own 7 kids up the same way.
